Transnational Repression Act of 2024

September 19, 20241 min read

The International Defenders Council (IDC) is playing a critical role in supporting the Transnational Repression Reporting Act of 2024 by working with Congressman Adam Schiff's office to create legislative support from key policymakers.

The Transnational Repression Reporting Act of 2024 focuses on transnational repression originating from the following countries:

  1. India – Including the assassination attempt on Sikh activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and harassment of the Sikh community.

  2. Saudi Arabia – Targeting critics, royal family members, and dissidents like Prince Abdullah bin Faisal al Saud and Saad Almadi.

  3. Iran – Involved in threats against journalists and activists such as Masih Alinejad, and assassination plots against Iranian-American individuals.

  4. China – Involved in harassment and intimidation of human rights and pro-democracy activists, including members of the Uyghur, Tibetan, and Hong Kong communities.

Legislative meetings are being held to build support for the bill, which addresses cases of transnational repression against U.S. persons and diaspora communities targeted by foreign governments. IDC’s efforts help secure backing for the bill by fostering dialogue with lawmakers and raising awareness of the importance of protecting human rights and freedom of expression.

The legislation is co-sponsored by Representatives Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), André Carson (D-Ind.), Jim Himes (D-Conn.), Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), Ed Case (D-Hawaii), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), and James P. McGovern (D-Mass.).
